#GelatoGoals: Bucket & Bay Celebrates Cinco de Mayo

by Abby Montanez

When you think of Cinco de Mayo, gelato probably doesn’t come to mind. However, Bucket & Bay owners Jen and Boris Kavlakov see things a little differently. Located in the Powerhouse Arts District of Jersey City, Bucket & Bay specializes in homemade artisanal gelato that starts with 100 percent organic grass-fed milk from Oasis farmers at Bird-in-Hand. With their seasonal and bold flavor profiles, the shop will be offering up a Mexican-spirit infused gelato flight, five flavors for $12 for the entire month of May. Collaborating with Órale Mexican Kitchen’s Alex Mendelsohn, the trio came up with an authentic and flavor-filled menu to kick off the holiday.

Bucket & BayStarting with the Sotol Por Siempre, a spirit distilled from the desert plant “Sotol”, it leaves the gelato with a subtle smoky and earthy taste due to the pit roasting and open-air fermentation process. If you’re looking for a sweeter option, try the Del Maguey Vida Mezcal gelato which tastes of honey, vanilla and fruity notes reminiscent of banana and tangerine. Or you can try the Casamigos Blanco Tequila, which is rested for two months and gives the gelato hints of agave, citrus, and vanilla. For people searching for something more bold, consider either the Trianon Tequila Anejo gelato, where the tequila is aged for 18 months in oak barrels and has a toasted caramel flavor, or the Ancho Reyes Liqueur gelato, made from ancho chilies which give off a spicy-sweet heat with notes of tamarind, plum, cacao, apple and almonds.

Inspired by the spring, Bucket & Bay will also be featuring flavors that reflect the freshness and earthiness of the season, using ingredients such as tarragon and lemon-thyme. There will be a Red Eye gelato made with cold brew coffee and an espresso swirl, and also a Toasted Coconut flavor. Other boozy favorites will include Fernet Branca, a dark liqueur with a bitter licorice flavor, a Dark & Stormy inspired gelato using Gosling’s Rum, a Black Label Vanilla with Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch whiskey, and they’re featuring a new rum-based sorbet called the Painkiller. They also offer vegan sorbets which include Campari Grapefruit and Mango Smoked Cardamom.

Bucket & Bay will also debut their daily gelato cart at Harborside Plaza 1 in Jersey City, and have plans to expand to Hoboken later this month. With about six to eight flavors on board, the carts will be out daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. perfect for that afternoon pick-me-up.
