Ibby’s Falafel in the Digest Lunch Box

by Abby Montanez

Ibby’s Falafel of Jersey City specializes in Middle Eastern cuisine and has been in business for 20 years now, opening their doors for the first time in 1996. Started by owner Anan Kwara, Ibby’s has been voted the “Best Falafel Restaurant” by NJ Monthly Magazine from 2009 through 2013 (amongst many other awards) and are considered the pioneers of bringing Middle Eastern cuisine and falafel to Hudson County.

Ibby's falafelServing up perfected family recipes, we were able to try some of their specialties this past Monday as part of the Digest Lunch Box. Our team had their “Famous Falafel” which is a mix of ground chickpeas, fresh vegetables and imported spices that is then fried until crispy and the Chicken Kebobs, marinated pieces of chicken breast that were seasoned and then grilled.

Ibby's falafelWe tried their hummus which is also made from ground chickpeas and then seasoned with lemon, tahini, imported olive oil and their Baba Ghanoush, which is baked eggplant mixed with fresh parsley, lemon, tahini and imported olive oil. On the side we had pita bread for dipping and stuffing, rice, and we tried their Tabouli salad, a Middle Eastern style salad consisting of tomatoes, finely chopped parsley, mint, bulgur wheat and onion and is seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice and salt.

A staff favorite, Ibby’s for sure came through for this week’s Digest Lunch Box!
