About two weeks ago I announced that I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of my adopted 10-week old puppy, Kota.
After picking out the perfect water and food bowls, contemplating which toys she’d like best, and finding a tiny collar that would fit, I picked up Kota on Saturday, April 12. My boyfriend and I were in love with her immediately and devoted the entire weekend to making her feel at ease while playing and training her.
I assumed my updated blog post discussing the first week with her would be one of anecdotes of lessons we learned as new puppy parents and stories of Kota’s unique personality. With a heavy heart, I have to inform our readers that after just three days of having Kota in our home we found out we had a sick puppy. She was diagnosed with Parvovirus, a highly contagious and potentially lethal virus that affects puppies. Since Tuesday, Kota has been back and forth between a 24-hour emergency care facility and our regular vet to get the best care possible. Last night she received a blood transfusion which we are hoping is the boost she needs to fight this stubborn virus.

Other than being refunded our adoption fee, the North Carolina-based shelter has not agreed to offer any compensation for our sick puppy or her veterinary expenses, which are in the thousands of dollars. Reluctantly, I have had to ask friends, family, and generous strangers for financial help so that we can hopefully offer her a life outside of veterinary hospitals and quarantined rooms.
